Just before you reach the south entrance of Lassen National Park there is the cross country ski trailhead for the McGowan Lake trail system. The Forest Service grooms these trails for cross country skiers all the way down to Mineral. If you have two cars it makes a great downhill trip. Allow yourself several hours and be prepared to take care of yourself on this trail system -- it is not patrolled.
